Italy has put the well-known pasta sauce, Amatriciana, up for nomination as a representative of Italian culture, as part of the UNESCO cultural heritage list.

Due to the dish’s popularity throughout Italy, the petition was passed by the UNESCO Italian commissioner, who will now present the traditional Italian sauce to other members of UNESCO to be added to the ‘UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists’.

The list establishes a range of cultural traditions from various countries around the world in order to protect the importance of worldwide heritage and promote awareness of their significance.

The Minister of Amatrice is delighted with the candidacy of Amatriciana sauce and hopes it will bring more relief to Amatrice after the devastating effects of the earthquake that shocked the town in August 2016. During the inauguration of the town’s catering pole, the minister further expressed his gratitude for the extensive help Amatrice has received from the natural disaster.

What is Amatriciana Sauce: it is a traditional pasta sauce using cured pork cheek, pecorino cheese, tomato, and onion. It is one of the most known sauces in Roman Italian Cuisine.
